Review: Fences

fences

Directed by: Denzel Washington
Written by: August Wilson, based upon his play of the same name
Starring: Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo

Summary: Through the eyes of Troy Maxson we see a black working mans’ desires, disappointments and ultimate self-destruction in 1950’s Pittsburgh. He laments for the life he felt he was cheated out of and watches as his family erodes due to the choices he made.

Fences was the first movie of 2016 I got excited about. Mid-summer I always pour through lists of the most anticipated movies of the fall and winter months and Fences was on just about every one of those lists – and with good reason – it’s a film with a very compelling story and some unforgettable performances.

The Golden Globes Predictions: Movies

The last of my picks and predictions for the films that will be recognized at The Golden Globes.

I have to note- there’s an excessive love for Birdman on this list, which I absolutely think it deserves…BUT- Whiplash was shamefully snubbed and isn’t a contender in a few categories where I think it could have won. Stupid Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

I’ll be relentlessly live tweeting during the ceremony on Sunday.

Best Motion Picture – Drama
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything

Boyhood_Quad_KeyArt_LoRes1Should Win: Boyhood
Could Win: ……………
I really can’t see anything other than Boyhood winning. The Theory of Everything is a solid film with great performances, Selma is a beautifully photographed and well acted movie, Foxcatcher has gotten questionable reviews; and while I really liked The Imitation Game the ambition of the project doesn’t match the risk that was taken making Boyhood. Below I have my picks and predictions for the TV nominees.

Best Television Series – Drama
The Affair
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
House of Cards

House of Cards is far and away the best show on this list. Netflix should be preparing to celebrate; a streaming-only released series winning one of the big TV titles marks a fairly significant moment in the transformation of the television industry.
Could Win: ………..
It’s a draw. The Drama Series nominees seem so random this year. Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, and The Good Wife are all great shows but seem like the obligatory nominees at this point. The Affair is a new show on Showtime with great potential but has hardly earned a spot on this yet.  Where is Mad Men? What about The Knick? Maybe even The Leftovers?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Claire Danes, Homeland
Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Ruth Wilson, The Affair
Robin Wright, House of Cards (more…)
