Budapest, Hungary: September 17th, 2014

Today was my final day in Budapest, my final day of travel. Before my flight got delayed I sort of felt like I was leaving without really finishing- like I had to give a book back to the library before I finished it- now I’ve had the time to finish without it feeling incomplete. (more…)

Budapest, Hungary: September 16th, 2014

Another gorgeous day in Budapest. I really, really like this city. I’d heard that people here were very rude, particularly in the service industry but I have not experienced that AT ALL. I mean, people aren’t kissing my feet or anything, but I’ve found people to be perfectly polite and helpful. Stuff is cheap here, too, like it was in Prague but I think even a bit better. I just got an entire pizza and a cocktail at dinner

all for about $12, and I could really only get through half of the pizza so I’ve got leftovers as well.

Today was absolutely splendid in so many different ways. Yesterday was not.
In short, I ended up missing TWO trains which resulted in me killing about 4 hours at the Vienna train station, 4 hours which I wanted to be spending enjoying my limited time in Budapest. It was just kind of the perfect storm of broken subway cars, poorly marked train compartments, and confusing seat reservations. The result was me sitting on the floor of the train vestibule for 2 hours with about 9 other people because the train was overbooked. I felt like I was being hauled away to a concentration camp. To compound the problem- my train arrived about 30 minutes after the start of a performance of La Sylphide that I had purchased tickets. I was frustrated.

Budapest, Hungary: September 14th, 2014

Not much to post about today, folks. I went through kind of a transportation nightmare getting here from Vienna and ended up losing half a day while my time in Budapest is already cut short. I’ll spare you the details because it will just sound like whining–the important part is that I’m here and have a really good feeling about Budapest. Tomorrow should be fun.

It pains me to admit that tomorrow is my last full day in Europe. Tuesday afternoon I have to head to the airport and board my flight to the States. It’s amazing, it feels like a lifetime ago that I was landing in Bergen. It was really just a little more than 2 weeks ago. I don’t mean that in the ‘oh my god, I can’t believe its only Tuesday, this week won’t end’ sort of way. It feels like I’ve lived a lifetime of wonderful experiences- I can hardly comprehend that all of this has happened in the last 14 days.
Crazy.

Tomorrow will be absolutely delightful, rain or shine.

Vienna, Austria: September 13th, 2014

Today started ok, but it was a challenging evening, my friends. I’m over my irritation about the last few hours, but it was still an unfortunate turn of events (we’ll get there).

This morning I checked out of my last hostel and hiked over to the hotel I am staying in for my last night in Vienna. I mentioned yesterday that switching to hotels for tonight and in Budapest made me feel like kind of a sell-out…until I walked into my hotel room. (more…)

Vienna, Austria: September 11th, 2014

I’ve just arrived in Vienna! My one and only goal today was to not get lost wandering around a city with my giant backpack on. Between my hours and hours of walking with that thing on in Bergen and Prague, I made a vow that TODAY I WILL NOT BE LOST! And it worked. Sort of.

I had a 10:30 train to catch from Prague to Vienna. In preparation the night before I had mapped out in very specific detail where to go after I arrived at the train station in Vienna. I made sure I was at the train station extra early to catch the train- I ended up killing time trying to spend the last of my Czech money. I was sickened with myself when I was blowing my last 200 krones (don’t get excited, its like $8) on junk and cursing myself for not giving it to one of the homeless people on The Charles Bridge last night. Anyways, I boarded my train in a timely fashion, took my seat and I was on my way. (more…)

Prague, Czech Republic: September 10th, 2014

Today was my last day in Prague. The weather was perfect. It was cloudy with temps in the low 60s- a cardigan kind of day, my favorite. It was a lovely day to spend out and about. I left my hostel this morning and just kind of started walking. I knew I wanted to walk across the Charles Bridge and through the Jewish Quarter. (more…)

Prague, Czech Republic: September 9th, 2014

Well, friends- I am loving Prague so much that I decided to add an extra day here 🙂 I was supposed to leave for Vienna tomorrow and decided to give myself another day. I woke up this morning and thought ‘I could spend the day frantically trying to absorb as much of the city as possible, or I could mess with my itinerary and have 2 leisurely, nicely paced days’. So, I’m in Prague until Thursday morning when I take a 4+ hour train to Vienna.

After running a few errands and going for a stroll I decide to visit a church near the Old Town Square. It is actually the church that inspired the castle that was illustrated in Sleeping Beauty.
IMG_3836.JPG The area is pretty built up around it so its hard to get a full look at the entire building. They had a ‘no photos’ policy inside, but it definitely resembled St. Vitrus, which I visited earlier this week. I could just tell that they were of the same style and probably the same time. The interior was all stone and sharp angles- the ornamentation was black and gold, which is sort of an unusual choice. You don’t usually see that much black in decor that is meant to honor something of religious significance. Definitely a fun thing to see. (more…)

Prague, Czech Republic: September 8th, 2014

Right now I am lounging in the quiet common area at my (kick ass) hostel listening to the rain fall in the courtyard and eating some camembert. Its a very pleasant way to cap off the day.

I must have been exhausted because I didn’t wake up until 10:00. That’s unheard of for me! So, I got a bit of a late start which made for a very leisurely afternoon.

When I finally got out the door I walked just a block up from my hostel to the St. Nicolas church. It was beautiful and a very interesting contrast from the St. Vitus cathedral that I visited yesterday. The church is filled with gorgeous marble with gold and green and pink. I enjoyed my visit to this church because it was a cool escape from a pretty warm day and nearly empty. There were just a handful of other people in that church which makes for a much more serene experience.
