Where to See All of the Best Picture Nominees

Do you want to get caught up on all of the Oscar Best Picture Nominees? Right now you’re in luck, as most movies are in wide release, but there’s a few you’ll need to make a special effort to track down. Buzzfeed posted the great list below of how to see each of the nominated films. I’ve also included where to see these films in the Madison area.

American Sniper

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing
Where You Can See It: American Sniper is in wide-release beginning today, January 16th. It should be available for rental and purchase in April.
In Madison: Eastgate Cinemas, Point Cinemas, AMC Star Fitchburg, Sundance 608

Birdman

birdman01

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing
Where You Can See It: Birdman was originally released in the fall and left theaters fairly quickly. Luckily, due to it being an Oscar favorite it has returned in limited release.
In Madison: AMC Star Fitchburg, Sundance 608

Boyhood

boyhood-hawke

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing
Where You Can See It: A few theaters may be re-running Boyhood in light of the attention its received in the last few weeks (although critics have pretty much been talking about this non-stop since its summer release). However, Boyhood is also on DVD and digital purchase or rental so I would strongly encourage you to take the time to watch it in whatever way is most convenient.
In Madison: Boyhood is not screening in Madison right now.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

4

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Where You Can See It: Rumor has it that this will also be re-released to theaters, and given the beautiful production design it might be worth seeing in a theater rather than the small screen. The Grand Budapest Hotel is currently available for rental or purchase including Netflix (DVD only), and if you’re an HBO subscriber you can watch it on HBOGo.
In Madison: As of right now The Grand Budapest Hotel isn’t playing anywhere locally.

The Imitation Game

THE IMITATION GAME

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing
Where You Can See It: The Imitation Game is currently in wide release across the country. It should be available for rental and purchase in March.
In Madison: Sundance 608, Eastgate Cinemas, Point Cinemas

The Theory of Everything

x900

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score
Where You Can See It: This is currently in wide release across the country. It should be available for rental and purchase on February 17th.
In Madison: AMC Star Fitchburg

Selma

SELMA

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Original Song
Where You Can See It: Selma was pushed nationwide right away and will only add more showtimes now. Monday is Martin Luther King Day, so now will be a popular time to see Selma. It should be available for rental and purchase in May.
In Madison: Sundance 608, AMC Star Fitchburg, Eastgate Cinemas, Point Cinemas

Whiplash

WHIPLASH

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing
Where You Can See It: I don’t think Whiplash really ever had a wide release when it came out in the fall. So if your local theater is playing Whiplash, lay down and praise the theater gods. This is playing in select theaters, likely for a very short amount of time. However, it is expected to be available for rental and purchase on February 24th (just 2 days after the Oscars).
In Madison: Whiplash is not currently playing anywhere in Madison.

If Marcus Theaters is in your area you may also have the opportunity to see all of the contenders at the Best Picture Festival that Marcus is putting on. On Saturday, February 14th four of the films will be screened and the following Saturday (the 21st) the final four nominees will be screened. The schedule is as follows:

2998749370_2137dc1bd4Day 1: Feb. 14th, $28
1:20 Boyhood
4:30 The Theory of Everything
7:00 Whiplash
9:10 American Sniper

Day 2: Feb. 22nd, $28
2:30 The Grand Budapest Hotel
4:35 The Imitation Game
7:00 Selma
9:30 Birdman

$60 to see 8 films? That’s a great deal. Locally, the only Marcus Theater in Madison participating is Point. See a full list of participating theaters here. The beautiful thing about the Best Picture nominees this year is that there are really no BAD nominees. I would recommend viewing every single one of those movies with varying levels of enthusiasm.

Now, go get caught up!
